Originally written in Dutch but now translated into English, this book will make a great addition to the library of any finch and softbill enthusiast. Species covered in this book include, Cardinals, Grosbeaks, Buntings and Siskins. The book contains 250 coloured photos.
The author Rob van der Hulst, has been actively involved with American Songbirds for the past 25 years. He has enjoyed astounding results showing many species. He won Gold medals with his yellow Cardinals and Black Headed Grosbeaks at the world exposition in Germany in 1994 and again in Italy in 1995. He has also enjoyed great breeding success with different species and was awarded two certificates for being the first breeder in the Netherlands of the Rose Breasted Grosbeak and the Blue Grosbeak. He has also had great success breeding the Vermillion Cardinal and the Brazilian tanager.

This book has an excellent layout as the example seen here shows. Each species is given a tile page. The latin name is given as well as the family name it belongs to. The birds size is also included. The excellent distribution map shows such things as its permanent distribution area, its breeding area and its migrating area, if its a species that migrates. A brilliant photo of the species faces the title page.

You will especially enjoy the 250 coloured photos throughout the book and if for no other reason, the book is worth having just to enjoy looking at the photos ! Beside the pictures of each species, both male and female, some showing both winter and summer plumage, there is also a great selection of parent birds feeding chicks, nests, including eggs and chicks are various stages and shots of young.
